3 Ways To Add Security To Your Exterior Door Locks

by Siep Baremans

Often, homeowners take their common household locks for granted. Given the age and the commonplace status of locks and keys, it is understandable that many don't think twice about their home's locks. One turn of a key, and the home is secure. What you may not know, however, is that you can increase the security of your home just by tending to the locks of your exterior doors.

Install your deadbolt properly the first time.

When installing a new deadbolt lock system, you'll want to make sure you do it properly the first time. Often, homeowners don't take bolt size and screw size into account, as well as neglecting ratings of deadbolt locks. For proper installation, make sure the throw (the bolt that comes out of the door when you turn the lock) is at least one inch long, and that any screws holding the striker plate in place go at least three inches into the door frame.

With proper lock installation, your exterior doors will be less likely to be opened by force. If you have any concerns about installing a deadbolt yourself, contact a licensed locksmith.

Do you have windows on your exterior doors?

If you have windows on any of your exterior doors, you may have a lessened state of security. This is because a window can be broken easily, enabling a burglar to simply reach in through the broken pane to turn the lock and gain entry.

For added security to doors that feature windows, consider installing a double cylinder lock that requires a key from the inside. This can ensure, if a break in does occur, that the burglar won't be able to easily turn a lock through a broken window.

Keep your spare house key with a friend or trusted neighbor.

Many homeowners choose to make a duplicate house key or two for safekeeping in the event that they lose their main key or become locked outside of their home. If you do choose to have a spare made, though, avoid leaving it in a hiding place on your property. Instead, keep your spare--or spares--with a friend or trusted neighbor. This can keep prying eyes from poking around looking for spare keys around your property.

Incorporating these three simple methods can ensure added security to your home. Whenever you feel you have any concerns or simply need some hardware or keys made, contact your local licensed locksmith.
