How To Make Your Home Unattractive To Burglars

by Siep Baremans

If are interested in making your home more secure, then there are a variety of different approaches that you could take. However, it can be difficult to tell the difference between effective measures and measures that will just drain your bank account. In many cases, your first step should be to modify the appearance of your home to dissuade burglars from even attempting to break in. To help you get started on this path, here are some quick and/or cheap ways to make your home unattractive to burglars:

Appearances Over Effectiveness

Your first instinct might be to simply cover your home in locks, security systems, and cameras. However, those measures will really only come into play if someone does decide to break into your home. A much more effective method is to make your house seem like a poor target, so how can you do that?

Shrubs and Plants - Firstly, you don't want to have shrubs, bushes, or other plants too close to the exterior of your home. These provide great cover for anyone that is looking to sneakily scout out your home. They might even provide a stealthy route straight to a window or other access point. If possible, you want to have several feet between your home's walls and plants that are more than a foot or two tall.

Lighting is a Great Deterrent - Secondly, you can scare off most burglars with strategically-placed lighting. If your doorway is well lit (particularly when activated by a motion sensor), then few burglars are going to risk going in through the front door. Similarly, motion-activated lights in your backyard can make a burglar panic and run. The main draw of these lights isn't necessarily that they will allow you to see and catch these burglars, but rather that it will scare them. Their eyes might not adjust for a few seconds and they might panic and run.

Deadbolts Are Strong - If you want to have strong and durable doors, then a deadbolt is your best bet. A good deadbolt will extend several inches into the door frame, creating an extremely strong barrier. Very few people will be able to break your door down, which means that you have one less threat to worry about. A locksmith like Action Lock & Safe or others should be able to replace the locks in all of your ground-level doors, and provide you with further expertise on how you can keep your home safe.
