Is Your Ex Live-In Partner Threatening You? What To Do

by Siep Baremans

If you had a partner living with you and the relationship ended, but they are still threatening you and you fear they can get into your home, you want to act quickly. You don't want to worry about what could be waiting for you when you get home from work, and you can take care of the problem for good. You will want to make sure there is no reason for them to be there, and that you take the necessary security precautions. Consider the following.

Remove All Their Items from Your Property

Remove all items of theirs from your property so there is no reason why they need to show up at your house, and no reason for them to contact you at all. If they refuse to get all their items from you, find a mutual place or location where you can take the items and they can pick the items up. A friend's house, their work or anywhere that works will be the best option, so you don't have another encounter with the person.

Hire a Locksmith

If the person ever had a copy of your key or knew where you hid your spare key, it's time to change your locks. Call a locksmith to have all the locks around the exterior of the home changed, and to possibly install a home security system if you don't currently have one at the house. If you do have one, it may need to be updated or changed by the locksmith, since the person threatening you knows it's there.

Call Your Attorney

Call and attorney and let them know about the threats that you've been receiving, and take the evidence that you have. The lawyer may want you to file an incident or police report so that the courts are aware you have a problem with the person threatening you, in case they take more severe action. They also may serve the person a formal letter requesting them to stop contacting you to avoid legal complications in the future.

If you are worried that the person that was living with you still knows how to get inside, or maybe they still have a key to the house, make sure that you do what you can to prevent them from having access to your property. You would rather be overly cautious than sorry when it comes to improving the security and taking legal action. Contact a business, such as VIP Locksmith Tampa, for more information.
