Tips For Troubleshooting Common Deadbolt Lock Issues

by Siep Baremans

Deadbolt locks are lock systems that feature a solid bar and lock cylinder. They are designed for durability and can withstand a large amount of force. The thick locking bar is crafted to be difficult to breach, so it serves as a strong reinforcement for any door. While they make a great addition to most doors, these locks aren't immune to many problems. Here are some of the most common issues that you might encounter and tips to deal with them.

General Wear and Tear

The locking mechanism of a deadbolt sees a lot of movement. That movement can lead to a lot of wear and tear on the moving parts. You can help to maintain sufficient movement in the lock by lubricating it. Just pull the cover off the inside lock mechanism and apply penetrating oil. This will help keep things moving as they should. Once or twice a year is usually enough unless you start to experience trouble. If lubricating doesn't restore movement, you can call a locksmith to replace the assembly.

Hitting the Strike Plate

If you turn the deadbolt and it won't secure completely, it may be hitting the strike plate on the other side of the lock. The strike plate is the metal piece that attaches to the door jamb around the opening where the bolt slides into the door frame. If the locking bar hits the strike plate, you'll want to file down the edge of the strike plate to widen the opening. This should make it easier to operate the deadbolt. If filing doesn't restore the movement of the lock, you should remove the strike plate, patch the screw holes using wood putty, then relocate the strike plate and the tumbler so that the lock operates properly.

Weakened Door Frame

Although deadbolt locks are designed to keep your doors secure, they can only do that if the door frame itself is stable and strong. If your door frame is deteriorating, the lock isn't going to be able to provide you the same strength and resistance. If your door frame is weakened, you can reinforce the lock by adding solid metal plates around the area where the deadbolt slides into the frame.

Installing deadbolts is a great way to keep your doors secure, but only if you keep them working properly. With these tips and the help of a reliable locksmith, you'll be in a better position to care for your locks.
