Protecting Your Valuables With The Right Safe

Improve Your Building's Access Control System

by Siep Baremans

Having an access control system is great provides you with a greater level of control over who comes in and out of your building. For your access control system to really keep you safe, you need to make sure that you don't become compliant with the system, but are constantly looking at ways to improve it.

Think About Who Needs Access to What

In order to do this, you first need to think about who needs access to what parts of your building. Access needs may change over time so don't assume the access and permissions that you set-up when you installed the system are still relevant.

Look over the access permissions and see if you need to change or limit access for certain individuals. To more easily control the systems, you can create zones throughout your building, and then grant access to specific types of personal to those different zones.

For example, the cleaning staff needs access to most of the building and your computer tech team needs access to most spaces as well. However, your regular workers probably don't need access to every part of the building.

Evaluate Who Has Access

Next, you need to evaluate who already has access to what. You need to make sure that you don't have old cards out there that allow old employees access to your building. Go through your logs and deactivate any cards that belong to employees who no longer work in the building or who have moved positions and don't need the same level of access they once had.

Once you clean up your logs, create a system for deactivating cards when an employee leaves. This could be part of the check-out process with human resources and your tech department when someone is fired, resigns, or is promoted to a new position.

Update the Technology

Finally, make sure that you are updating the technology. That means installing each firmware update that comes out so that your system is not easily hacked. That also means updating the entire system when it becomes out of date and the firmware updates will no longer protect you from being hacked.

An access control system gives you a great level of control over who enters your building. Make sure that you are really limiting access with your control system. Evaluate who has access and deactivate cards that are not being used. Update the technology behind your system to ensure proper encryption.
